History of school
The Silesian University in Opava was established by a law passed by the Czech National Councilon July 9, 1991. For more than one hundred years, Opava tried to become a university town, applying in 1870, 1945 and 1968. Where these efforts had failed, the democratic changes after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 enabled a new application to succeed. According to the decision of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Masaryk University in Brno was appointed the legal authority responsible for the preparations for the founding of the Silesian University. On September 17, 1990, the Faculty of Philosophy and Science in Opava and the School of Business Administration in Karviná were established. On October 8, 1990, courses of study commenced. The Mathematical Institute in Opava was established in 1999 by its separation from the Faculty of Philosophy and Science and the Extramural Centre in Krnov was founded in 1999 too. Opava is a city with a rich cultural history and a significant cultural background. It is the home of the Silesian Regional Museum, the oldest and third biggest museum in the Czech Republic.
