History of school
The University of Agriculture in Brno is the oldest independent higher education institution of its type in the Czech Republic. It was established by Act No. 460, issued on July 24, 1919, which defined its name and structure, with two study branches: agriculture and silviculture. This establishment was the culmination of more than 100 years of effort to introduce university-level agricultural studies in Moravia. A decree signed by the President of Czechoslovakia, T.G. Masaryk, appointed the first 12 professors, and Prof. Frantioek Bub·k, an outstanding botanist and phytopathologist, was elected to be the first rector. In the period between the two World Wars, the development of the University was complicated. The acquisitions of the Forest Training Estate at Adamov (1923) and the University Farm at eabEice (1925) would eventually serve not only for the practical education of students, but also for research. In 1945, after the end of the Second World War, the University of Agriculture was completely restored and modernised. During the period between 1945 and 1952, the University made additions in agricultural studies, with specialised courses in plant production, animal production, food technology and horticulture. There were also several additions in the area of silviculture. Between 1952 and 1969, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine formed part of the University of Agriculture, Brno. The Faculty of Agricultural Economics was established in 1959 and, within its framework, studies of mechanisation were added in 1964. In 1985, the Faculty of Horticulture was established in Lednice na MoravI, withtwo specialisations: horticultural production and landscape architecture. As from January 1995 the name of the University has been changed to the Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Brno. At present, the University has four faculties with 56 study programmes. In 2003, approximately 884 students graduated. The co-operation among the four faculties is very fruitful, contributing not only to research but also to agricultural practice, and to international co-operation and integration. Education and research activities are in some cases carried out in co-operation with foreign universities. Members of the University staff are active members of about ten international non-governmental organisations (e.g., ESNA, IUCN, EAPR, IUFRO, EUCARPIA etc.). Experts from the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology co-operate with UNESCO and with international governmental organisations, such as FAO, ECE, and ILO.
Structure of the Institution
The University consists of four faculties: Faculty of Agronomy Faculty of Horticulture Faculty of Economics Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology The following institutions are responsible for day-to-day university operations, and for research: The University Farm at Žabčice, the Masaryk Forest Estate at Křtiny, the Central Administration of Student Halls of Residence and Canteens, the Science and Pedagogical Information Centre, the Computing Centre, and the Botanical Garden with the Arboretum.

Organisation of studies
In accordance with the Higher Education Act, the faculties organise bachelor, master and doctoral study programmes.. The study programme is completed by the state examination. In a partial study programme, with the approval of the dean of the faculty, students may complete a portion of their studies at a comparable faculty, either in the Czech Republic or abroad. In a simultaneous study programme, students may participate simultaneously in a second study programme, at a different faculty or at a different university. The University offers several doctoral study programmes as a preparation for a scientific career. Students in lifelong learning programmes take some of the courses that are being offered within the framework of a regular study programme. This form of study enables students of different study programmes, graduates from other faculties, and students who interrupted their ordinary studies, to complete or supplement their education.
Student Services
The University Publishing Centre publishes university textbooks. All textbooks are available from the campus bookshop. The University has its own library, with about half of million books, and a reprographic centre. Students are accommodated in student halls of residence. Health care is managed in student health centres and in hospitals. Students are invited to participate in sports activities organised by the department of physical culture and by the University sports club.
