Simon Smith is a sociologist. He works a the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences and also at the Institute for Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he holds a Marie-Curie Fellowship. He is researching the sociology of journalism in the light of virtual communication, specifically blogging. In the past he has worked at the universities of Leeds, Salford and the West of Scotland. He has published in a range of areas including organisational sociology, knowledge creation, research evaluation, public political participation or regional development. He obtained his PhD from the university of Bradford for a thesis on independent cultural spaces in 1970s and 1980s Czechoslovakia.
